San Diego Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum is a staple along the Port of San Diego with its tall ships docked for everyone to gaze from the boardwalk and peruse with entry.
The museum includes:
Star of India (world’s oldest active sailing ship)
HMS Surprise (replica of Royal Navy Frigate)
Californian (official state ship)
Berkely (ferry)
San Salvador (recreation of a ship that would have originally explored the west coast in the 16th century)
USS Dolphin (deepest diving submarine)
Medea (steam yacht)
Pilot (guides ships into the harbor)
PCF 816 Swift Boat (patrol boat, Vietnam era swift boats made famous by John Kerry)
The Star of India is the crown jewel but I wanted to make sure I went before the end of the year to see the HMS Surprise, the star of the film Master & Commander.
For $30 the museum is well worth it. The ships are well maintained, informative, and fun. I expected the sails & riggings to be the most exciting part but the boiler room in the Berkely was some of the coolest engineering I’ve ever seen.
